L'invito per la prima mostra collettiva tenuta presso l'Associazione universitaria "De Palma"
He was born on 28 October 1942 in Altamura (BA).
At the age of 13 he moved to Assisi where he attended the Franciscan college of the conventual friars minor.
After completing his studies, he returns to his hometown (1958). It was 1961 when he enrolled at the Art Institute in Bari, obtaining his diploma in 1964, thanks also to the support of Don Salvatore Maggi who, impressed by the young man's predisposition, offered himself as a financier until he completed his studies. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, becoming a pupil of Giovanni Brancaccio (scenographer of the De Filippo brothers) and forging an artistic partnership with the assistant professor, Michele de Palma, also from Puglia.
In 1965, in his early twenties, he took part in the collective exhibition "Del pendio" at Corato (BA). The jury includes the painter Francesco Speranza, Roberto De Robertis, Domenico Purificato and the art critic Pietro Marino.
The following year Domenico Ventura held his first personal exhibition in his city, at the "De Palma" University Association. 14 works on display.
1968 marks a setback in his academic career: he pays dues for having participated in student demonstrations and is rejected along with the whole course.
In 1970 he moved to the atelier in via Cairoli, still in Altamura. He takes part in the group show at the local Centro Servizi Culturali.
The following year he set up his second solo show in Bari, at the "sporting Club". As many as 15 works were presented, many of which of considerable size. Michele Campione will sign the critical testimony in the exhibition brochure.
In 1972 it was the turn of the one-man show held at the "La varnish" Art Gallery in Bari. He exhibited fifteen oils and, also on this occasion, it was Michele Campione who would publish the "letter-criticism".
In 1973 he exhibited in Martina Franca, at the "Salvatore Basile" Gallery. Again Michele Campione will edit the critical text.
Two years later, he exhibited at the "L'Unità" Festival in Altamura. He held two exhibitions in 1976 in Martina Franca (at Salvatore Basile) and, in August, in Montescaglioso, on the occasion of the local Festival of “L'Unità”.
In 1977 he held a personal exhibition at the "Cassiopea Due" gallery in Bari by Nicola Muciaccia. In the critical letter signed by Nicola Ficarra, the request for censorship of some subjects, considered harmful to public decorum, is noted. In the same year he exhibited in Rome (Remo Croce's bookshop) and later in Matera (at Rocco Fontana's "Labyrinth"), where he exhibited etchings for the first time. Among the participants, Luigi Guerricchio, Placido Scandurra and Francesco Paolo delle Noci.
In 1978 Pietro Marino signed the written text of the exhibition held in Taranto, at the Popular Culture Library. In June he exhibits in Gioia del Colle (BA) at the "Ricciotto Canudo" Art Center. In December of the same year he held a personal exhibition at the Italsider Employee Club in Pulsano (TA).
On 6 August 1979 he married Mariolina Perinei and, in December, the firstborn Francesco was born. In January he orders a personal exhibition at the "Eros" Gallery in Milan, with a critical text by Berenice. In Gravina (BA) he will hold a personal exhibition at the "E. Pomarici Santomasi" Foundation-Library.
In 1981 the second son Dario was born. He moved his atelier to via Carvellà 1, a hundred meters from his home, in the historic center of Altamura.
In 1986 he took part in the group show held on the occasion of the "L'Unità" Festival. We note the participation of the painters Luigi Guerricchio, Roberto Lenassini, Ivo Scaringi, Salvatore Salvemini. Critical text by Pietro Marino.
In 1989 he held an exhibition in Matera in Piazza del Sedile entitled "What will Domenico Ventura have in mind for Piazza Sedile?". Among the works exhibited by him are "La Signora di Napoli" and "Woman with bubbles".
In 1992 he exhibited in Altamura ("Domenico Ventura aims at Piazza Duomo". Among the exhibited works "Donato Laborante", "the bathtub" and "pregnant child"). Critical text signed by Ugo Martiradonna. In December he exhibited in Matera ( Electa bookstore, where he held another one-man show two years later).
1995 is the turn of Rome, the city in which he holds two personal exhibitions at the "DDT" cafeteria and at "Zoe Drinks". In Altamura he exhibits at the "Pitti Caffè", in an exhibition entitled "You are none".
The following year he took part with some etchings in the traveling collective "Art as a work of redemption", held in Altamura (Onis Birreria), Montalbano Ionico (Circolo Culturale "L'Arco") and in Matera (Camera Club). We note the participation of Claudio Abate, Giuseppe Filardi, Lelice Lovisco, Arcangelo Moles, Ivo Scaringi and Enzo Sforza.

From 21 December 1996 to 19 January 1997 he took part in the Constellation Art Review at the "Octopus" in Terlizzi (among the participants, Addamiano, Altamura, Azzella, Caradonna, De Santoli...).
In 1998 he moved near the Cathedral of his city, in the atelier in Claustro Tito Speri. In September he holds an exhibition in Piazza Duomo ("Neerio naked"). Critical text by Enrico Filippucci. He participates in Potenza in the Carlo Gesualdo collective curated by Rocco Brancati.
In the last year of the last millennium he orders a personal exhibition entitled "Saverio Nudo" in Gemonio (VA). Critical mimeographed text by Saverio Lucio Lomurno.
In 1999-2000 he held a personal anthological exhibition at the "Opra Arte & Arti" Gallery. On this occasion, the volume “Domenico Ventura” Bad Thoughts, edited by Massimo Guastella, published by the R&R publishing house of Matera is presented.
Vittorio Sgarbi in 2006 chooses one of his works ("Angel with sword") for the exhibition "Evil: cruel painting exercises", which will be held at the Stupinigi hunting palace (TO) under the patronage of the Piedmont Region.
In 2011, Sgarbi himself was curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, for the occasion extended to all regions of Italy. The exhibition is held at the Santa Scolastica complex in Bari. Domenico Ventura is one of the selected artists.
In 2014 in Rome the solo show "Domenico Ventura da Altamura" was held at the Studio Abate curated by Takeawaygallery.
In 2017, the exhibition at the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Palazzo Lanfranchi in Matera, curated by Marta Ragozzino, was entitled "Scherzetto".
The homonymous catalog edited by Tommaso Evangelista will be obtained from the exhibition.
In 2018 Vittorio Sgarbi, honorary president of "Il quadrivio", invited him to participate in the "Sulmona Prize": the chosen work was "Abbraccio da dopo" (2017).
From 12 June to 21 July 2019, Francesco Paolo Del Re and Sabino de Nichilo curate the solo exhibition "Le Malelingue", at "Casavacant" in Rome.
In the following years, Domenico Ventura - in the fertile hermitage of his atelier - would continue to paint well into the evening, mainly oils on canvas, until the last days of his life. He will lead an existence gathered around his family and faithful friends, punctuated by frequent outings in the countryside, the subject of numerous photographic shots which over the years will nourish a powerful archive; shots that will constitute precious sources of inspiration for his works.
With a shy and reserved temperament, Ventura has never sought consensus by indulging in fashions and trends. Detached from the art circuits, over the years he has cultivated friendships linked to his academic acquaintances, as well as those of artists such as the sculptor Vito Maiullari or the photographer Claudio Abate, with whom he shared a thirty-year partnership.
On April 2, 2021 he passed away in his Altamura.
